Peniocereus striatus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet striatus means 'striped'. Spanish common names are "Cardoncillo", "Jacamatraca" and "Sacamatraca".

description

Peniocereus striatus grows as a shrub with numerous, liana-like shoots and reaches heights of up to 1 meter. The ocher-colored roots are bulbous tufts and are 30 to 40 centimeters long. The brownish-green to gray-green, very slender, upright or almost upright shoots are up to 100 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 6 millimeters. There are six to nine narrow and low ribs . Of the two white, straight, downward-facing central spines up to 3 millimeters long , some are pointed darker. The nine to ten straight, whitish radial spines lie on the shoot surface.

The reddish purple flowers are usually open during the day. They are 7.5 to 15 inches long and reach 5.5 to 7.5 inches in diameter. Your woolly pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with bristle-like thorns. The pear-shaped, bright red fruits reach a length of up to 4 centimeters and contain a red pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus striatus is common in the Mexican states of Baja California Sur , Sinaloa and Sonora at altitudes from 0 to 400 m.

It was first described as Cereus striatus in 1801 by Townshend Stith Brandegee . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1975 . Synonyms are Wilcoxia striata (Brandegee) Britton & Rose and Neoevansia striata (Brandegee) Sánchez-Mej. .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
