Peniocereus viperinus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet viperinus means 'snake-like'.
description
Peniocereus viperinus grows as a shrub with numerous shoots and reaches heights of up to 3 meters. The robust roots are fleshy. The spread, elongated, gray-green shoots are covered with a dense felt and have a diameter of 0.8 to 2 centimeters. There are small black areoles on the eight to ten ribs . The three to four central spines are black and up to 6 millimeters long. The eight to nine radial spines are also black, lie on the shoot surface and reach a length of up to 4 millimeters.
The bright red, salver-shaped flowers appear along the side of the shoots and are open during the day. They are up to 9 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with black, bristle-like thorns and long, white wool. The obverse pear-shaped fruits are scarlet.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Peniocereus viperinus is distributed in the Mexican states of Morelos , Oaxaca and Puebla at altitudes of 1,000 to 1,700 m.
It was first described as Cereus viperinus in 1904 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Klusáček placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1935 . Synonyms are Wilcoxia viperina (FACWeber) Britton & Rose and Cullmannia viperina (FACWeber) Distefano .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
