The Penkenbahn is a cable car  in the Zillertal in Tyrol that leads from Mayrhofen up  to the Penken . It was opened in 1954 as an aerial tramway , which was replaced by a two-cable gondola in 1996 and a tricable gondola in 2015 . It opens up the Penken ski area and is operated by Mayrhofner Bergbahnen AG.

Technical specifications

The valley station is at an altitude of 655  m on the main road in the village, the mountain station at 1790  m . The lift cabins hold 32 people (24 seats + 8 standing places) and the journey time is 8.2 minutes. The greatest incline of the 2924 meter long Penkenbahn is 74 percent. The conveying capacity is up to 3840 people per hour downhill. Mountain transport is limited to 2880 people for reasons of comfort (all seated) and the power of the drive.

Building history

After the founding meeting on May 10, 1953 in the Hotel Neuhaus in Mayrhofen, the supervisory board at that time took the preparatory construction measures for the first Penkenbahn. Construction began in autumn 1953. Despite all the difficulties that arose from the construction activity during the winter, the Penkenbahn was officially opened on July 7, 1954. A reconstruction of the Penkenbahn was decided and carried out in 1972. Since then, a transfer station has enabled 4-car operation, which has increased the transport capacity from 350 to 650 people per hour. On November 24, 1994, after years of efforts, the company received the positive building permit for the new construction of the Penkenbahn as a two-cable gondola at the old valley station location. As a world first, this project had a 7 ° angle of the center support in order to bring the guests directly into the ski area. The excavation work for the new mountain station began on November 27, 1994. On March 19, 1995, the old Penkenbahn ran for the last time. Despite the extremely tight schedule, the new lift was completed in time for the start of the winter season. The official inauguration took place on January 20, 1996. The transport capacity could be increased to 2,000 per hour with cabins for 15 people. The success of this cable car and the high number of its operating hours made it necessary to plan a further renovation from 2010 onwards. Due to a renewed increase in transport capacity, this was closely linked to the need for a new transport concept for the town.

Despite resistance from part of the population, including in a referendum, the municipal council decided in 2014 on a new transport concept for Mayrhofen, which focused on the construction of a new train station and new transport routes. This enabled the new Penkenbahn to be built. On February 19, 2015, the decision to build the three-cable gondola became final after Mayrhofner Bergbahnen AG had reached an agreement with all residents. Construction work officially started on April 13, 2015. In order to give the guests an insight into the progress in the construction of the Penkenbahn, a construction diary was set up. The new Penkenbahn was officially opened on December 19, 2015.

Overhead line crossing

The Penkenbahn crosses a two-circuit 110 kV three-phase overhead line . In the event of an accident, however, this does not matter because the new three-cable gondola with redundant drive systems can always remain in operation. As one of the first railways in the world, it no longer needs a mountain system.
