Percy Stafford Allen

Percy Stafford Allen (born July 7, 1869 in Twickenham , † June 16, 1933 in Oxford ) was a British classical philologist .

Life

Allen received his first education in Rottingdean. Since 1882 he studied Latin and Greek at Clifton College and since 1888 at Corpus Christi College , Oxford. One of his Oxford teachers was James Anthony Froude . In 1892 he made his BA, in 1896 his MA. From 1897 to 1901 he taught history at Government College in Lahore (Pakistan). He then returned to Oxford and in 1908 became a Fellow of Merton College , Oxford. From 1924 to 1933 he was President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was married to Helen Mary Allen (1872-1952). Everyone is best known as the editor of the letters of Erasmus von Rotterdam (Oxford 1906ff., 12 volumes, one of which is a register).

In 1923 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
