Pereskia quisqueyana is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pereskia quisqueyana grows shrubby and reaches heights of 2 to 4 meters. The greenish-brown to brown, smooth trunk has a diameter of up to 25 centimeters. The spindle-shaped thickened roots have a length of 20 to 30 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 10 centimeters. The leaves are stalked. The elliptical to obovate to lanceolate leaf blade is 3 to 5 inches long and 2.5 to 3 inches wide. The areoles only have thorns and do not produce any leaves. On the branches there are up to four straw-colored to brown thorns per areole that are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. Up to 120 thorns are formed on the trunk per areole, which have a length of 2 to 6 centimeters.

The flowers are unisexual and reach a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. Fruits and seeds have not yet been described.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia quisqueyana is distributed in the southeast of the Dominican Republic in coastal thickets on coral limestone and sand at sea level.

It was first described in 1980 by Henri Alain Liogier .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
