Henri Alain Liogier
Henri Alain Liogier (also Hermano Alain or Enrique Eugenio Liogier, actually Henri Eugene Liogier de Sereys Allut ; born January 31, 1916 in Chomelix , France , † November 9, 2009 in Fort Worth , Texas ) was a French botanist . He made a significant contribution to the study of the Caribbean flora. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Alain ".
biography
In 1940 Liogier obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree and in 1945 a doctorate in natural sciences from the Universidad de La Habana in Cuba . In 1950, 1953 and 1957 he received a Guggenheim scholarship . From 1955 to 1962 he was a research fellow at Harvard University . In the following years he taught as a professor of biology and botany at various universities in the United States and in the Dominican Republic , including from 1964 to 1970 at Manhattan College in New York City and from 1970 to 1976 at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña in Santo Domingo . In 1965 he became an honorary curator for West Indian botany at the New York Botanical Garden . In 1978 he became a taxonomist at the University of Puerto Rico Botanical Gardens . Most recently, he was a research fellow at the Botanical Research Institute in Fort Worth , Texas .
On numerous expeditions to Cuba (1938–1960), Hispaniola (1968–1978) and Puerto Rico , Liogier collected over 45,000 specimens.
Liogier wrote more than 80 scientific articles and books and described over 300 new plant taxa from the Caribbean . One of his standard works is La Flora de la Española , which appeared in nine volumes between 1982 and 2000.
Dedication names
Taxa such as Terpsichore liogieri , Scolosanthus liogieri , Eleocharis liogieri or Psychotria liogieri are named after Liogier .
