Earl Busby Hunt (born January 8, 1933 in San Francisco , † April 12 or April 13, 2016 ) was an American psychologist . He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and President of the International Society for Intelligence Research .

Life

Hunt studied psychology and sociology at Stanford University ( BA , 1954). Hunt was with the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957 . In 1960 he received his Ph.D. from Yale University . After holding professorial positions at UCLA and the University of Sydney , Hunt was professor at the University of Washington since 1966.

"Buz" Hunt had been married to his wife Mary Lou since 1955, with whom he had four children.

Hunt's research areas were cognitive psychology , artificial intelligence and the intensive use of mathematical models in the social and life sciences . From 1971 to 1978 he succeeded Arthur Allen Lumsdaine (1913–1989) as Dean , who held the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington from 1965 to 1971.

In 1996 his book Are We Smart Enough? awarded the William James Book Prize of the American Association for Psychological Science (APS). In 2009 he was honored by the ISIR ( International Society for Intelligence Research ) for his life's work with their highest distinction, the Lifetime Achievement Award . In 2011 he also received the APS's highest honor, the James McKean Cattell Award , for his life's work.
