Perigrapha i-cinctum is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 37 to 44 millimeters. In the color of the front wings smoky gray tones dominate. Sometimes there are also brown-gray or slightly reddish dusty specimens. Ring , kidney and cone blemishes are large, filled in light gray or light brown, closely connected and usually bordered in yellow. The middle field, especially the area around the blemishes, is dark brown to black. The indistinct wavy line shimmers whitish. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing. There are short heads of hair on the thorax and the first abdominal segment.
Caterpillar
Younger caterpillars are green in color. The back and side back lines are whitish or yellowish in color, the side stripes are yellow. Adult caterpillars take on a pink color. Their drawing pattern is similar to that of the younger stages.
Doll
The brown pupa has a bluish frosting and is characterized by two longer and several short hook bristles on the cremaster .
Similar species
- Since the sister species Perigrapha scriptobella occurs in the Kopet-Dag Mountains, there is no geographical overlap.
- Perigrapha circumducta is often larger (up to 55 millimeters wingspan) than P. i-cinctum and more contrasting in color. Since the species occurs in Siberia and from the Urals to Japan , there is no geographical overlap in this case either.
- The occurrences of Perigrapha heidi are in the Hissar Mountains and the Pamir Mountains , those of Perigrapha centralasiae in some desolate high mountain regions of Central Asia . This means that these species also inhabit completely different regions than Perigrapha i-cinctum .
Geographical distribution and habitat
The occurrence of the species extends locally through southern and southeastern European countries to Asia Minor . The following subspecies with their distribution areas are known:
- Perigrapha i-cinctum i-cinctum , in the Pannonian Plain
- Perigrapha i-cinctum gepida , in France and Italy
- Perigrapha i-cinctum slovenica , in Slovenia and other Balkan countries
- Perigrapha i-cinctum hethitica , in Turkey
Perigrapha i-cinctum is found preferentially on warm, dry grasslands and on mountain slopes.
Way of life
The moths are mostly nocturnal and like to visit artificial light sources and occasionally bait or suckle on flowers. Their very early flight time includes the months of March and April. The caterpillars live in May and June. They feed polyphagously on the leaves of various plants, for example plantain - ( Plantago ), dock - ( Rumex ), strawberry - ( Fragaria ), star chickweed - ( Stellaria ), dead nettle - ( Lamium ), knapweed - ( Centaurea ), pasque flowers - ( Pulsatilla ) or species of dandelion ( Taraxacum ). The species overwinters in the ground as a pupa.
