Services

With his working group, Peter Alheit has opened up new perspectives for the concept of "biography" in terms of social science and education. Sociologically, his biography theory overcomes the classic difference between subject and society, between structure and action. In terms of educational science, his biographical approach not only refers to the social and lifeworld contexts of educational action and experience, he also makes the fundamental resources of all learners comprehensible in a social constructivist interpretation of individual learning processes. With his term "biographicity" an ability of people in modern societies is conceived, the competence necessary for civil survival, to connect their own experiences to new social challenges and to always find new ideas for individual and social problem solutions. Alheit initiated a comparative study of three post-socialist sub-societies, the border regions between Poland, the Czech Republic and East Germany, or in long-term and multiple university comparative studies in seven European countries, finally in an extensive comparison of autobiographies from the end of the 18th century to the present. Alheit is also one of the protagonists of the socio-cultural movement in the Federal Republic, as a lifelong learning specialist in Europe and as an expert in analyzing the consequences of demographic change in modern western societies.
