Peter Aufreiter

Peter Aufreiter (born December 19, 1974 in Linz ) is an Austrian museum director. From 2015 he headed the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino , and since January 2020 he has been General Director and Scientific Managing Director of the Technisches Museum Wien .

Life

After finishing high school in Linz, Peter Aufreiter attended the commercial academy in Linz-Auhof, where he graduated in 1995 . He then began studying German and art history at the University of Vienna , completing his master's degree in 2002. A stay abroad took him to the University of Urbino in 1999/2000 .

After graduating, he was registrar and curatorial assistant at the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna from 2003 to 2005 and exhibition manager at the Kunsthistorisches Museum from 2005 to 2008 . In 2008 he moved to the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere , where he headed the exhibition management and loans department and, from 2010, was entrusted with the administration of the Artothek des Bundes in the 21er Haus . In October 2015 he became director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino .

In June 2019, Minister of Culture Alexander Schallenberg appointed him director of the Technical Museum Vienna with the Austrian Media Library following the unanimous proposal of the selection committee . He succeeded Gabriele Zuna-Kratky in this role on January 1, 2020 . His contract was initially concluded for five years.

Since December 2019 he has been a member of the board of ICOM Austria under President Bettina Leidl .
