Peter Becker (mathematician)

Peter Becker , also Petrus Becker (born November 3, 1672 in Rostock , † November 25, 1753 ibid) was a German mathematician and theologian.

Life

Peter Becker was the son of Hermann Becker (1632–1681), professor of mathematics at the University of Rostock and pastor of the Jakobikirche and his wife Agnes, née Hassertz. He studied theology at Rostock University from 1690 to 1692 and then worked as a private tutor until 1694. In 1696 he acquired the degree of master's degree . From 1697 until the end of his life he was a full professor of lower mathematics at the University of Rostock, in this position he was the direct successor of his father. In 1715 and 1723 he was rector of the university.

From 1701 he was also the rector of Rostock's large city school until he took over the office of archdeacon in 1714 and pastor at the Rostock Jakobikirche in 1721. From 1733 to 1735 he was "director ministerii", director of the spiritual ministry .

In 1700 Becker married Margarethe Cecilie Tielcke, daughter of the Rostock mayor Johann Joachim Tielcke (1648–1724).

Naming

The minor planet with the number 365739 has been named Peterbecker since 2015 . The small celestial body is located in the asteroid belt between the planets Mars and Jupiter . Its name goes back to the efforts of the Rostock amateur astronomer Elvira Pfitzner.
