Peter Becker (molecular biologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter B. Becker (born September 12, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German biochemist and molecular biologist . In 2005 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for his research into chromatin structure and its role in the activity of genes .

biography

Peter Becker studied biology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1978 to 1983 and graduated in 1984 with a diploma . His dissertation took place in 1987 with summa cum laude at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg with Professor Günter Schütz . The title of his doctoral thesis is In vivo analysis of protein / DNA interactions on regulatory sequences of the tyrosine transferase gene .

From 1987 to 1988 he was a research assistant at the DKFZ and from 1988 to 1991 visiting scientist in the Laboratory of Biochemistry at the National Cancer Institute with Professor Carl Wu in the USA. From 1991 to 1999 he was group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory ( EMBL ) in Heidelberg. In 1996 the habilitation followed with the acquisition of the " Venia legendi " in the subject of molecular biology. Since 1999 he has been a full professor at the Chair of Molecular Biology at the Adolf Butenandt Institute of the Medical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Peter Becker works primarily on the structure of chromatin , i.e. the organization of DNA in the cells of eukaryotic organisms. He researches the question of how the organization of chromatin influences the function of DNA and thus of genes. One of the most important findings is the dynamics of the histones in DNA, which can be shifted in active sections of DNA.
