Peter Becker (reformer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Becker , called Petrus Artopoeus (* 1491 in Köslin , Pomerania , † March 29, 1563 ), was a German theologian and reformer .

Peter Becker had studied theology in Wittenberg , namely with Martin Luther , Philipp Melanchthon and probably also with Johannes Bugenhagen . He then worked as a teacher in his hometown Köslin. There he soon fell out with the papists and was then chased away by the clergy. He then became a teacher at the Latin school in Rügenwalde . Later he was appointed rector of the city school in Stettin and in Stettin in 1540 - as the first ever - appointed pastor primary at the Stettin Marienkirche . He was friends with the theologian Andreas Osiander, who worked at the University of Königsberg , and was in correspondence with him.

When Becker was suspected of being a follower of Osiander's doctrine of justification, he was summoned by the sovereign to Belgard , Neustettin and finally to Wollin . Becker publicly apologized. Although the Szczecin Landtag denounced and threatened Osiandrism , no less than the papacy, as heresy, Becker relapsed and was therefore relieved of his office in 1556. His writings were burned. He then returned to Köslin, where he lived as a private citizen and died in 1563.

Under the name Petrus Artopoeus he had published theological works and a grammar of the Hebrew, Greek and Latin languages. One of his theological works had been placed on the Index of Forbidden Scriptures by the Vatican .
