Peter Cook (architect)
Sir Peter Cook (born October 22, 1936 in Southend-on-Sea , Great Britain ) is a British architect and author. He is a member of the Archigram group, well known in the 1960s .
Life
Peter Cook is a graduate of London's prestigious Architectural Association and has been an associate editor and active author of Archigram magazine since the early 1960s and one of the leading thinkers and thinkers of the Archigram group until 1976. Archigram first appeared in public in 1963 with the presentation Living City , with which the group already spoke out against formal conventions and thought schemes of architecture in favor of loose and free associations. Their activities were prioritized over pop culture and advanced technology. The most important projects were Plug-In City , Walking City , Cushicle and Instant City . In his later own projects, such as Green, Yellow, Red and Blue Houses, Peter Cook increasingly converted his theoretical statements into more pragmatic construction projects . However, to this day, Archigram's basic thoughts, thought models and ideas always remain decisive in the work of Peter Cook.
In recent years, in addition to some interesting projects in collaboration with Christine Hawley , as well as Cook, professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London , he has made a name for himself around the world, primarily through his theoretical debates on architecture, both verbally and in writing. The new building of the Kunsthaus Graz (The Friendly Alien) in Graz , Austria in 2003 attracted particular international attention .
Peter Cook has been a professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main since 1984 , for which he also designed the new university canteen in 1992. He also teaches at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Peter Cook's other positions as visiting professor were: MIT, UCLA , Harvard, Tokyo, Oslo, Moscow, Rice, Queensland, Berlin, Haifa, Madrid and Aarhus as well as 70 other universities. He is currently teaching at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris.
In January 2004, Monacelli Press published Peter Cook's latest book project, The City, Seen As a Garden of Ideas . In this book he combines his own projects with general considerations of urban space and cities such as Tokyo, Edinburgh, Houston and Santa Monica. In doing so, however, he is not interested in “entire cities, not entire projects, but rather accumulated fragments and various inspirations” (quote from Peter Cook).
When setting up the campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (2009–2013), his architectural office “CRAB Studio”, which he runs with Gavin Robotham, was in charge of the department building D3 and the administration building.
Peter Cook lives and works in London.
