Peter Cowan

Peter Walkinshaw Cowan AM (born November 4, 1914 in Perth , Western Australia , † June 6, 2002 ) was an Australian writer.

Life

Peter Cowan's grandmother was Edith Dircksey Cowan , the first female MP in an Australian Parliament; a university in Australia is named after her.

Cowan was the only son of Norman Walkinshaw Cowan and Marie Emily Johnston. He graduated from Perth Technical College in 1938 and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Western Australia. Peter Cowan was married to Edie Howard and had a son, Julian, with her. He volunteered for military service in World War II , but was turned down for health reasons. He worked at times as a teacher.

Awards

In 1963, Peter Cowan was granted a Commonwealth Literary Fund Fellowship to write his first novel, Summer . In 1987 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia and in 1992 received the Patrick White Award for an Australian Writer of Great Distinction . The Edith Cowan University appointed him an honorary doctorate of philosophy in the 1995th
