Peter Czakert

Peter Czakert (born December 12, 1808 in Bohemia ; † September 3, 1848 in Lafayette ( Louisiana / USA )) was a Roman Catholic clergyman.

Life

Peter Czakert entered the Redemptorist order in Vienna and took his religious vows there on August 4, 1832 , and was ordained a priest on January 12, 1834 . That year he was also appointed to go to the United States with the first Redemptorist missionaries . After arriving in the United States, he devoted the first few years to missionary work and building the Order in the states of Pennsylvania , Ohio, and Illinois . In 1843 he came to New Orleans and helped establish a Redemptorist congregation there. In 1844 he was appointed superior general in the USA.

At the request of the local bishop he came to Lafayette at the end of 1847 and worked there until his death.
