Peter Erasmus Lange-Müller (born December 1, 1850 in Frederiksberg , † February 26, 1926 in Copenhagen ) was a composer of the Danish late Romantic period.

Life

Lange-Müller was the son of a judge at the Danish Supreme Court . In 1871 he began studying music at the Copenhagen Conservatory , and at his father's request, he also temporarily studied political science . Soon, however, he turned back to music and devoted himself - in poor health - mainly to composition, without holding a musical position. For a time he conducted the Copenhagen Concert Society, which he co-founded. In 1892 he married Ruth Block; 3 children were born in the marriage.

Lange-Müller became known as a composer for his suite In der Alhambra op. 3 (1876), which was initially written for four-handed piano and which became one of the most frequently performed Danish orchestral works of the time. As a result, he mainly emerged as a composer of around 250 songs and ballads on Danish, Norwegian, Russian and French texts. He also wrote stage music (including a piece of music for Once Upon a Time (Der var engang) by Holger Drachmann from 1887, op. 25), from which the Midsommervisen sung at Midsummer Festival comes, as well as 4 operas. His works also include 2 symphonies (No. 1 in D minor, Op. 17 from 1879, No. 2 in D minor, Op. 33 from 1889, revised in 1915), a violin concerto and piano pieces. The majority of his oeuvre, comprising 77 opus numbers, was written by 1900; after that, Lange-Müller hardly composed any more.
