Peter Gomes

Peter John Gomes (born May 22, 1942 in Boston , Massachusetts , † February 28, 2011 ) was an American theologian , professor at the Harvard Divinity School of Harvard University and author.

Career

Gomes graduated from Bates College in 1965 and Harvard Divinity School in 1968. He worked at the University of Cambridge and most recently at Emmanuel College , where the “Gomes Lectureship” was set up for him.

As a Baptist preacher, Gomes was ordained in the First Baptist Church in Plymouth , Massachusetts. Gomes was considered a recognized expert in the early American religions. From 1970 he served in the Memorial Church of Harvard University . Gomes was also a curator of Bates College . He was considered an excellent clergyman and preached in both the United States and the United Kingdom . In 1998 he was named Clergy of the Year by Religion and American Life . Gomes published several books. Among other things, he wrote the works The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart and Sermons and The Book of Wisdom for Daily Living , which were published by William Morrow & Company . The Good Book received the Lambda Literary Award in 1997 . In addition, Gomes wrote several articles and ten works with sermons.

In 1991, Gomes surprised many people when he came out . Since then he has been an advocate for greater acceptance of homosexuality in American society. Gomes declared that he was celibate . Throughout his life, Gomes was a Republican politician and supported Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush . In August 2006, however, he changed parties and became a member of the Democrats to support their candidate Deval Patrick , who became the first African-American governor in Massachusetts that year.
