Peter Köll (born February 1, 1941 in Neumünster ; † December 22, 2008 in Oldenburg ) was a German chemist and professor at the University of Oldenburg .

Life

Köll studied chemistry in Göttingen and Hamburg. He received his doctorate in 1971 under Kurt Heyns at the University of Hamburg with a dissertation on the topic of "Structure elucidation and reactions of the dimeric 1,6-anhydro-β-D-hexopyranose-3-uloses". After several years as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg, Köll was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor of Organic Chemistry with a focus on natural product chemistry at the University of Oldenburg in 1975 , and in 1981 he was appointed to the Chair of Organic Chemistry at the University of Oldenburg . Köll remained loyal to the research area of preparative carbohydrate chemistry (sugar chemistry) and published 170 scientific papers on it. In 1981 Köll was awarded the Océ-van der Grinten Prize for the Promotion of Science for his pioneering work in the field of the chemistry of renewable raw materials ( sustainability ). Köll was a founding member of the Oldenburg branch of the GDCh and chairman of the local branch of the Society of German Chemists. The Angelus Sala Society for Carbohydrate Chemistry was founded on an initiative by Köll. He was the longtime editor of the Journal of Carbohydrate Chemistry . 1980–1982 Köll was Vice President of the University of Oldenburg and 1984–1985 Dean of the Department of Chemistry.

In Peter Köll's working group, 35 graduated chemists were promoted to doctorates . Professors Arne Lützen ( University of Bonn ) and Bernd Meyer (University of Hamburg) and Sabine Köpper are academic student of Köll that at the University of Oldenburg habilitated . Married to Magdalena Köll, b. German, Köll was the father of a daughter and a son.
