Peter Knapp (born June 5, 1931 in Bäretswil ) is a Swiss artist who mainly worked in France. He is best known as a fashion and art photographer and as a revolutionary in the layout of fashion magazines.

From 1946 to 1950 Peter Knapp trained as a graphic designer at the Zurich School of Applied Arts , then from 1951 to 1952 at the “ École des Beaux-Arts ” in Paris . Until 1959 he worked as a freelance artist in Paris, Brussels and New York City . In 1953 he was artistic director of the magazine “Nouveau Féminin” and in 1955 of the “ Galeries Lafayette ”. In 1955 he started taking photos. He made his first fashion photos in 1960. From 1959 to 1966 and again from 1974 to 1977 Knapp was the artistic director and fashion photographer of Elle magazine and in this function was one of the most influential people in the fashion sector at the time. From 1967 to 1987 he worked as a fashion photographer for “ Courrèges ”. He has been a freelance photographer since 1987. Since 1984 he has headed the Parisian “École Supérieure d'Art Graphique ESAG”.

Knapp published his pictures in various magazines, including Stern , Vogue , Sunday Times and Marie Claire . He has received awards from the Art Directors Club seventeen times. He had exhibitions in various large galleries in Zurich, Paris, Geneva, Basel, Zagreb, Lausanne, Bologna, Bochum, Cologne ( Photokina 1988), Belfort, Dole, Tokyo, Taipei, Saumur, Saint-Denis de la Réunion, Keynes, Marseille and Chalon-sur-Sâone. In addition to photography, Knapp is also active as a painter, draftsman and sculptor.
