Peter Mafany Musonge (born December 3, 1942 in Muea) was Prime Minister of Cameroon from 1996 to 2004 .

Early years

Musonge belongs to the Bakweri ethnic group and was born in Muea in the Fako department in the English-speaking southwestern province of the country.

He studied civil engineering from 1962 to 1967 at Drexel University in Philadelphia and then until 1968 at Stanford University . After graduating with a degree, he returned to Cameroon in 1969. He held leading positions in the Ministry of Infrastructure and was director of government development organizations.

Politician

In politics, he is a long-time supporter and confidante of President Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982 . He belongs to the ruling party Rassemblement démocratique du peuple camerounais (RDPC). From September 19, 1996 to December 8, 2004 he was Prime Minister of Cameroon. In the parliamentary elections on June 30, 2002, his party won 133 of the 180 seats, with the opposition parties questioning the result. In 2004 he led Biya's election campaign for his re-election as president. After Biya's election victory, he resigned in order to allow a cabinet reshuffle.
