Simon Achidi Achu , also called Pa (born November 5, 1934 in Bamenda ) is a Cameroonian politician. From 1972 to 1974 he was Minister of Justice, from 1992 to 1996 Prime Minister of the country.

Early years

Achu grew up in Santa in the English-speaking north-western province of the country. After attending school, he went to the university in the capital Yaoundé . There he was a co-founder of a student association whose first president he became. He later continued his studies in Marseille . He got his nickname Pa for his friendly disposition.

Politician

He had been a member of the cabinet since October 29, 1971, and on July 3, 1972, President Ahmadou Ahidjo , who had been in power since Cameroon gained independence from France on June 1, 1960, appointed him Minister of Justice. He stayed in office for around two years and then returned to Santa and ran a farm. After a few years outside politics, he was elected to parliament.

President Paul Biya , Ahidjo's successor since 1982, appointed him Prime Minister of a coalition government on April 9, 1992. He belongs to the president's party, the Democratic Assembly of the Cameroonian People (RDPC). By appointing an English-speaking head of government, the president wanted to reduce tensions with this minority in largely French-speaking Cameroon. In October 1992 there were the first presidential elections with several candidates, which Biya won. In terms of foreign policy, his government had to grapple with a border conflict with Nigeria in 1994 , which was later settled through the mediation of the United Nations . After his resignation, his term of office ended on September 19, 1996. His successor was Peter Mafany Musonge , who also comes from the English-speaking part of the country.
