Peter Miethe

Peter Miethe (born January 27, 1944 in Prieros , Beeskow-Storkow district ) is a former German rear admiral of the People's Navy and the last NVA officer to receive the rank of admiral.

Life

After finishing school in 1962, Miethe joined the armed organs of the GDR and began studying at the officers' college of the Volksmarine Karl Liebknecht , which he completed in 1966. In 1963 he became a member of the SED . From 1966 to 1967 he served as 1st officer on watch on a landing ship of the 1st Flotilla . From 1967 to 1969 he was an instructor for youth work in a landing ship brigade and was then responsible for the entire 1st flotilla until 1973. From 1973 to 1976 Miethe studied at the military academy of the NVA "Friedrich Engels"in Dresden. As deputy head of the armed organs department, he worked for the Central Council of the FDJ from 1976 to 1977 and was in charge of this department from 1977 to 1984. From 1984 to 1986, Miethe worked as an employee in the department for security issues in the SED Central Committee. In the following time he worked as deputy head of this department until 1989 and then took over the management himself as successor to Wolfgang Herger until 1990. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the GDR, Miethe was appointed rear admiral on October 7, 1989, making him the last officer of the NVA to be raised to the rank of admiral. In 1990 he worked for the head of the Administration for Civic Work in the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense (MfAV) . On March 31, 1990, he was released into retirement.
