Peter Modest Valentin Waterloo (born May 6, 1797 in Marienrachdorf , † November 27, 1875 in Montabaur ) was a German mayor. He was from 1832 to 1849 mayor and subsequent to 1875 Mayor of the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Montabaur.

Life

Peter Modest Valentin Waterloo was born on May 6, 1797 in Marienrachdorf as the son of a tax consultant. Until 1832 he was employed by the Montabaur rural school building. On June 1, 1832, he was appointed city ​​school official as a ducal Nassau state official. In the same year, on November 27, 1832, he married the 26-year-old Helene Isbert from Montabaur, making him brother-in-law of Jakob Isbert . The marriage resulted in two sons, the later higher regional judge born on September 24, 1833 in Frankfurt a. M., Adolf Jakob Johann and Adam Carl Modest, born on January 12, 1835, who died on June 14, 1845. A few days after this birth, his wife died on January 21, 1835 and his sister Helene took over the household from then on.

During the March Revolution of 1848, Waterloo was temporarily deposed by revolutionaries, but continued to exercise his office free of charge. After the revolution, the cities were given the option of self-government and mayors in Montabaur could again be freely elected. As a result, Waterloo became mayor of the city of Montabaur with effect from February 1, 1849.

During his tenure, Waterloo was responsible, among other things, for the relocation of the Idstein teachers' college in 1851 to Montabaur Castle and the new construction of the old town hall, which is now a listed building , in 1866. Up to the age of 70, Waterloo had written all administrative correspondence and community protocols himself by hand . Only then did he apply for writing assistance, which he was allowed to do at the meeting of the municipal council on January 23, 1869. In the years that followed, his health deteriorated, so that on October 9, 1875, the local council transferred all mayor's duties to his deputy, Karl Neurohr, and at the request of the city council, Franz Wilhelm Hisgen, on November 11, 1875, he decided to do so with a full salary in grateful recognition of his longstanding services retire loyalty until the end of life.
