Peter Murray Taylor, Baron Taylor of Gosforth

Peter Murray Taylor, Baron Taylor of Gosforth , PC ( May 1, 1930 - April 28, 1997 ) was Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from April 27, 1992 to June 4, 1996 .

Taylor was appointed to the bar in 1954, as a judge to the High Court in 1980 and to the Court of Appeal in 1988. His name became known to the wider public when he was appointed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to head an investigative commission to study with the Incidents of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 should address. The Taylor Report , as the final report of the commission was called, resulted in the standing-up seats in the stadiums and the removal of the barriers around the seating areas. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to Lord Chief Justice . In 1992 he was namedBaron Taylor of Gosforth, of Embleton in the County of Northumberland, promoted to Life Peer .

In 1996 he resigned from office for health reasons. He died a year later.
