Athletic career

After Peter Pfitzner had played for the company sports association (BSG) Motor in the Thuringian Schmölln in the youth field, he rose in the 1968/69 season with the 2nd team of the army football club FC Vorwärts Berlin from the third-class district league to the GDR league . In his first season in higher-class football, the 22-year-old defender only played four GDR league games. After leaving the National People's Army , he joined the upper division BSG Chemie Leipzig for the 1970/71 season. There he first played in the GDR league team Chemistry II, with which he played nine point games. After Leipzig's defender Bernd Dobermann was drafted into the army, Pfitzner moved up to the league team, where he was also used as a defender in all of the remaining 15 league games. Chemie Leipzig ended the season as relegated to the GDR league. There Pfitzner was involved in the immediate resurgence with 14 appearances in 22 point games and in all eight promotion games. In the following two league seasons he had his regular place in the defense and only missed two point games in 1972/73. When chemistry Leipzig again relegated from the league in 1974, Pfitzner left after 65 league games and 23 appearances in the GDR league (9 for chemistry II) the BSG chemistry and joined the GDR league club BSG Wismut Gera . There he played another two seasons, in which he completed 35 of 44 GDR league games. At the age of only 29, he said goodbye to high-class football in 1976. As a recreational footballer, he was then active again at Motor Schmölln in the district league.
