Peter Röthig

Peter Röthig (born June 25, 1928 in Dresden ; † September 4, 2018 ) was a German sports scientist .

Life

Peter Röthig (home club: OSC Berlin ) was active in athletics as a sprinter, long jumper and all-rounder. In 1955 he became student world champion with the 4x100 meter relay of the General German University Sports Association. He won several championships at the Berlin and North German level and was German master of the students. His best time over the 100 meter distance was 10.9 seconds, in the long jump he achieved a personal best of 7.12 meters. In the further course of his life he played volleyball and won the German senior championship. He also did gymnastics, cycling, skiing and tennis.

After studying at the Free University (FU) Berlin , he worked at the University of Tübingen as an academic advisor to Ommo Grupe and was in charge of the degree programs from 1965 to 1969. In 1966 he wrote his doctoral thesis in Tübingen on the subject of “Rhythm and Movement. An Analysis from the Perspective of Physical Education ”. From 1969 he was head of the institute for physical exercises at the Free University of Berlin and held this office until 1972.

Between 1972 and 1993 he was Professor of Sports Education at the Institute for Sports Science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and was temporarily managing director of the Frankfurt Institute. Röthig was one of the founding members of the German Association for Sports Science .

Röthig's academic focus was on educational, anthropological and psychological aspects of sports science.

In 1972 he was the sole author of the Sports Science Lexicon, which became a standard work and which Röthig later reissued in several editions as editor or co-editor. In addition, he published the course book series in which several volumes (including movement theory, training theory, sporting activity, sports biology) dealt with sports science fields for school instruction in sports theory.
