Athletic career

At the age of 18, Peter Stephan first achieved national recognition in GDR football when he won the GDR youth championship with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in 1978 . Mainly used as a right striker, Stephan continued to play for 1. FC Lok until 1983 in the junior league. In the 1980/81 season he was used for the first time in the GDR Oberliga, where he was substituted on the 2nd and 3rd game day in the 2nd half. Up to and including the 1983/84 season, Stephan never appeared in the official Oberliga lineup of 1. FC Lok. But he did come to another five league appearances in the 1983/84 season. After he had previously been used with the 2nd team in the third-rate district league , coach Harro Miller gave Stephan a chance as a substitute in five matches in the top division, but this no longer led to further missions.

In the 1984/85 season, Stephan moved to city rivals BSG Chemie Leipzig. The chemists also played in the league, but Stephan only came to two league appearances in which he only got 65 minutes of play. Only in the round of 16 for the GDR soccer cup 1. FC Magdeburg - Chemie Leipzig (4: 1) he was used over the entire game. Chemistry Leipzig then relegated to the GDR league , but Stephan was no longer listed in the team. Instead, he played with the 2nd team in the district league. He was only used in the first team in the eighth and quarter-finals of the GDR Cup 1986/87. In the 1986/87 season, Stephan officially returned to the GDR league squad. After he had only been used in five league games at intervals until the end of the season, he played all ten remaining point games from the 25th game day, where he was called up six times on the right side of the storm, but only scored one goal. Stephan completed his last season in the GDR league in 1987/88. Up to the 10th matchday he was regularly used in the attack, but was only used sporadically after that. His only goal of the season and the last ever for Chemie Leipzig he scored on matchday 7. After the end of the season, the team management announced that the 28-year-old Peter Stephan had ended his competitive sports career.
