Peter Sutter (born December 13, 1948 in Herisau AR) is a Swiss diplomat .

Career

Peter Sutter studied law at the University of Zurich (lic. Iur.) And the University of Basel (Dr. iur.). In 1976 he was admitted to the bar of the Canton of Zurich. In 1979 he joined the diplomatic service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs ( FDFA ).

From 1985 to 1991 he was the first employee at the Swiss embassies in Nairobi and then in Helsinki . In 1991 he took over the management of the newly created service for peace issues at headquarters. In this function he organized and led the delegation of one hundred Swiss election observers during the first general free elections in South Africa after the apartheid era   in April 1994 as part of the United Nations Observer Mission in South Africa (UNOMSA).

1994 Sutter was one of the rank Major General ( Major General ) with the leadership of the Swiss delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Korea ( NNSC ) in Panmunjom / Korea entrusted. At the beginning of 2000, Sutter opened the Swiss Liaison Office for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo ( UNMIK ) as head of mission in Pristina . In 2002, as ambassador, he headed Political Department VI “Swiss Abroad” at headquarters. In this function he repeatedly led the FDFA's crisis team, including a. 2003 in the hostage affair in the Sahara and 2004/2005 in the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. Until his retirement in late 2010, Sutter was the Swiss ambassador to the Philippines .

Private

From 2011 to 2017 he accompanied his wife Irene Flückiger Sutter, who was the Swiss consul general in Cape Town and then in Stuttgart . Peter Sutter has two grown sons and has lived with his wife in St. Gallen since 2019 .
