After attending school in Strømsø, Malling went to Latin school in Drammen. But he was more interested in typographical art than in the old classics and did an apprenticeship with Drammen's first book printer, Carl F. Rode. In 1827 he finished this training. He then traveled to Amsterdam, where the mother's family lived. There he found work as a typesetter in a large printing company. In 1829 he was in Hans T. From 1838 he started his own business. In 1839 he began to publish the Dagbladet , a newspaper for trade, shipping and politics, which was soon discontinued. In 1840 he bought Ludvig Risum's printing works and moved with them to Tønsberg . There he published the newspaper Tønsbergs Mercur until 1841 . During this time he continued to run his publishing house in Christiania. Then he moved back to Christiania, bought a large piece of land for his publishing house and acquired civil rights as a printer. He also had a bookshop; it was Norway's first retail bookstore. For a long time, his publisher was the largest in the country with 15 to 20 books a year. He published textbooks for secondary schools and for the university from 1846 to 1859 the Norske almanakk and together with Cappelen also from 1866 to 1876. The circulation was 60,000. Many of the professors were among his scientific authors, such as the historian Peter Andreas Munch and the philologist Carl Richard Unger . Ivar Aasen's Norwegian grammar and the Norwegian dictionary were also part of his repertoire. He also advocated women's literature. He had already made the acquaintance of Henrik Wergeland in 1820 and published many of his works. For a while, Malling also managed the bank's banknote printing facility.

Malling founded the Norwegian Booksellers Association in 1851, was first vice-president, then president from 1870 until his death. He was also strongly committed to Nordic collaboration in his field. He was also a long member of the Christiania magistrate. He held a high degree with the Freemasons and sold or donated much of the lodge. He was also head of the "old poor house" in Christiania. In 1873 his son, Captain Theodor Malling, also worked in the company. Two years later the printing company was incorporated into a company with Aschehoug & Co, but kept the name "Det Mallingske Bogtrykkeri".
