Peter Welzel (chemist)

Peter Welzel (* 1937 in Eisleben ; † July 22, 2008 ) was a German chemist ( organic chemistry , natural product chemistry ) and professor at the University of Leipzig .

Welzel grew up in Sangerhausen , where he also graduated from high school. From 1956 he studied chemistry at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in Bonn in 1965 with a dissertation on natural product chemistry (on the structure of some tetrasubstituted aporphine alkaloids). 1966/67 he was at Imperial College London . In 1971 he completed his habilitation in Bonn and was a private lecturer there. He was Professor at the Ruhr University Bochum since 1973 and Professor of Organic Chemistry and Natural Product Chemistry at the University of Leipzig since 1994 and Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Mineralogy from 1999 to 2001. In 2002 he retired.

He dealt with the synthesis of natural products, for example prostaglandins and their precursors.

He was chairman and founder of the Friends of the Schauspielhaus in Leipzig and founded the Leipziger Schauspielstiftung.

In 1999 he received the Otto Wallach plaque and he received the university medal from the University of Leipzig.
