Peter Winter (engineer)

Peter Winter (* December 7, 1943 ; † July 8, 2019 ) was a Swiss electrical engineer and engineer who is considered the initiator of the European Train Control System (ETCS).

Winter studied electrical engineering at the ETH Zurich ; "In the field of power electronics for railroad vehicles" he received his doctorate in technical sciences. From 1984 to 1999 he was construction director in the general management of the Swiss Federal Railways ; from 1986 to 1990 he was the "overall project manager for the Rail 2000 project ". From 1999 to 2000 he headed the “Development and Technology Division” of the Swiss Federal Railways. From 2000 to 2008 he worked for the SBB consulting group.

From 1990, Winter was President of the European Train Control Systems steering group at the International Union of Railways . In this role, he worked towards including the ETCS specification in the TSI .

Winter was a lecturer at the Transport Science Institute of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen . In 2007 he was appointed honorary professor by RWTH Aachen University and the Beijing Technical University .

He died on July 8, 2019 after a long illness.
