Peter van Walsum

Arnold Peter van Walsum (born June 25, 1934 in Rotterdam ; † December 4, 2019 ) was a Dutch diplomat who was the personal representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in the conflict over the Western Sahara . He was appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in July 2005 and carried out his duties until his mandate expired in September 2008.

Van Walsum graduated from Utrecht University in 1959 with a law degree and served in the Dutch Armed Forces from 1960 to 1962. In 1962 and 1963 he worked in civil defense planning for the Ministry of the Interior.

He then worked for almost 40 years in the service of the Dutch Foreign Ministry, including as the permanent representative of his country to NATO in Paris and the European Commission in Brussels as well as in the embassies in Bucharest , New Delhi and London.

After his posting to the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands to the United Nations in New York, he represented his country in the United Nations Security Council in 1999 and in 2000 was chairman of the committee that worked out sanctions against Iraq.

Peter van Walsum was married and had four children.
