At 584  m above sea level, the Peterberg is one of the highest peaks in Saarland ( Germany ) and is one of the Saarland's local mountains.

location

The Peterberg is located in the district of St. Wendel in the communities of Nohfelden and Nonnweiler , south of Braunshausen and north of Primstal , and is the highest elevation of the mountain range of the same name. This has a length of approx. 9 km over the line Primstal (southwest) - Sötern (northeast) and measures 3.3 km at its widest point, between Braunshausen and Eiweiler. The highest point of the ridge is also at this point. The mountain is about 3 km (as the crow flies ) south-southeast of the Nonnweiler motorway triangle, where the A 62 meets the A 1 . An old trade route St. Wendel - Trier ran over it and belongs to the southern Black Forest high forest.

Facilities

At the foot of the Peterberg there is a youth center of the Saarland gymnastics association . The training center is a DFB base and is jointly supported by the Saarland Football Association and the Saarland Gymnastics Association. The Peterberg Observatory (Association of Amateur Astronomers of Saarland eV) and the Peterberg Chapel are located on the summit . Both can be reached either on foot or by car via Braunshausen, Primstal, Schwarzenbach, Bosen and Eiweiler. A new driveway was built for the observatory near the motorway junction.

leisure offers

The Peterberg in Braunshausen was also known as a winter sports area from 1956 to 2013. Due to the changing climatic conditions, winter sports operations were completely stopped after the chairlift was dismantled (2013) and the drag lift (2018). The Peterberg leisure center , well-known beyond the country's borders, has a summer toboggan run with a total length of 1800 m (the longest in the southwest) and is open from April to October, depending on the weather. There are also other leisure facilities such as a slide paradise, a bungee trampoline and the druid children's playground. Next to the parking lot of the Peterberg leisure center there is an off-road route for radio-controlled model cars on a scale of 1: 8. This is operated by the RCR-Peterberg eV association

Say

In the book "Die Sagen der Saar" by Karl Lohmeyer, the Peterberg is referred to as the Hexenberg:

“The Hohe Peterberg near Eiweiler, the birch field too, is the actual main Hexenberg and so the" Brocken "of the Saarland. On the first night of May the witches from all over the world came together from all directions, for a devilish feast and a large witch's convention. "
