The FC Peterhead (officially: Peterhead Football Club ) is a Scottish football club from Peterhead . The club currently plays in the Scottish League One , the third highest division in Scottish football.

history

The club was founded in 1890 and played in the urban Raemoss Park , which was left to the club by the city. The Recreation Park , the club's first stadium, was built on the site with financial support from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie . It was to be used for over 100 years and was only replaced by today's Balmoor Stadium in 1997 .

In 1899 you played competitive football for the first time and took part in the Aberdeenshire League , whose member you stayed until 1931, when you were accepted into the Highland Football League . The first success was then the 1906 victory of the Aberdeenshire Cup , which could be won again in 1935 and 1936.

Between 1939 and 1946, the league and thus also football life in Petershead was paralyzed because of the Second World War . In the first post-war season, FC Petershead managed to win the Highland League . The success could be repeated in 1949 and 1950. This was followed by a long dry spell, which only ended in 1989 when the title was won again. In 1999 they were particularly successful: they achieved their fifth success in the Highland League, their 20th victory in the Aberdeenshire Cup, and they won the Aberdeenshire Shield .

When the Scottish Premier League was increased from 10 to 12 teams in 2000, the Scottish Football League decided to include two new clubs that would then be eligible to play in the Third Division . Petershead was one of the elected clubs, but remained at the same time a member of the Aberdeenshire FA .

The club was able to establish itself quickly in the third division and reached second place in 2005, which enabled promotion to the second division. As third in the Second Division they took part in the play-offs for promotion to the First Division in 2006 . However, they failed extremely narrowly when they had to accept the equalizer in the game against Partick Thistle seconds before the end of regular time, which forced extra time and a penalty shoot-out , which they then lost.
