Petra "Penny" Bayr (born April 28, 1968 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and has been a member of the Austrian National Council since 2002 .

education

Petra Bayr attended elementary school between 1974 and 1978 and graduated from a general secondary school in 1986 with the Matura . Following her school education, Bayr studied sociology and pedagogy at the Universities of Vienna and Graz until 1996 .

During her work as a member of the National Council, Petra Bayr completed the two master's programs "Human Rights" and "Legal Studies" at Danube University Krems .

Professional background

Bayr was already active as an editor for the school newspaper and head of school when she was at school. Between 1984 and 1985 she also worked as an employee at Ö3 and Radio Wien . Parallel to her studies, Bayr worked as a trainer in extracurricular youth work and between 1994 and 1997 was a clerk at ÖIAG . Between 1994 and 1996 Bayr also worked as a parliamentary assistant and from 1997 to 2001 she was political coordinator in the women's communication and cultural center "ega". From 2001, Bayr was involved in the public relations work of the SPÖ Vienna.

Political career

Bayr began her political career in 1984 in the GPA youth department and was, among other things, national chairman of the student union and the student union. From 1986 she also worked actively in the SPÖ Favoriten and between 1990 and 1992 was chairwoman of the women's committee of the Austrian Federal Youth Association. From 1994 to 1996 she held a political mandate for the first time as a district councilor and drug commissioner in Favoriten, and in 2000 became chairwoman of the Favoritner SPÖ women and deputy chairwoman of the SPÖ Favoriten. In 1996, Bayr was promoted to the local council and between 1999 and 2003 was also chairman of the young generation in the SPÖ Vienna. In 2002, Bayr was appointed to the National Council in Vienna's southern regional constituency and, after her successful election, moved from the municipal council to the National Council, where she became the SPÖ's development spokesperson. From 2007 to 2011 Bayr was Deputy Chairwoman of the Environment Committee in the National Council. Since 2003 she has been chairwoman of the development subcommittee.

Petra Bayr is a founding member of the Austrian Platform against Female Genital Mutilation, which was launched in 2003.

Petra Bayr has been President of the Vienna Education Academy since 2017 .
