Petra Joy

Petra Joy (* 1964 in Kempten ) is a German director, filmmaker, film seller, author and photographer. Like Candida Royalle , Annie Sprinkle , Maria Beatty , Joy is one of the film pioneers of the sex-positive women's movement . She describes her genre as "art-core", a form of pornography in which the film is shot from the "female point of view" and in which the woman's desire for sensual, creative erotic games is in the foreground. Joy's recurring themes are sex, men as sexual objects, female fantasies, and male bisexuality.

Career

Petra Joy studied film history, politics and English in Cologne. In 1990 she wrote her master's thesis on the representation of female sexuality in Nazi films. After graduating, she moved to England, where she worked as a freelance producer and director for German television for 10 years. Joy has made more than 70 documentaries for international television channels such as: B. for Channel 4 , National Geographic and the WDR . Since 1990 she has focused on lifestyle and sexuality. She also produced contributions for the TV magazine "Liebe Sünde" (Vox / Pro7 ).

In 2003 Joy founded the photo and video production company "Strawberry Seductress", which produces erotic material for women and couples. Her first film, which she also produced and camera on, was Sexual Sushi , in 2004. In 2006, HarperCollins published Joy's book How to Make Your Own Adult Video: The Couple's Guide to Making Sensual Home Movies . This was followed by Female Fantasies , Feeling it, not faking it! and 2009 The Petra Joy Award , an international erotic film competition for debut directors. Petra Joy runs porn workshops for women and participates in panel discussions across Europe. In 2008 she released the female porn compilation Her Porn and directed the autobiographical documentary The Joy of Porn: My Life as a Feminist Pornographer .

She lives in Brighton, England.

Erotic production

In 2004 Petra Joy began making erotic films with the aim of portraying female sexuality in a way that was unusual in mainstream pornography. Petra Joy works exclusively with amateurs with the aim of capturing real feelings in the film. It only shows safe sex and does not shoot scenes in which women are humiliated. Unlike mainstream porn, which often involves close-ups of the genitals, Joy focuses on the faces of the performers. The subjects of Joy's pornographic films are authentic sex scenes, men as objects, elaborate costumes and taboo subjects, e.g. B. Scenes in which women penetrate men with strap-ons .

Joy describes her inspiration as follows: “I don't care about commercially successful pornography: I want pornography that stimulates the mind and feeds the soul. I am a visual person and I like to express myself in pictures and photography that are very different from the mainstream of glamor photography and porn films. "

In 2009, Joy curated and produced the first episode of Her Porn with the aim of showing different erotic views of women. Her Porn 2 was released in 2010. Joy also distributes other directors' films.

Petra Joy's films have been shown at the Cinekink Film Festival in New York, at the Porn Film Festival in Berlin and at the British Film Institute .

The Petra Joy Award

Petra Joy founded The Petra Joy Award in October 2009 to encourage debut female directors and to strengthen the genre of “porn from the female point of view”. The competition with the topic “What do you think is erotic?” Was sponsored by the lubricant company pjur . Registrations came from Australia, the Netherlands, England, Austria and Spain. The winners' films were premiered in the Movimento cinema in Berlin at the Porn Film Festival. In addition to cash prizes, the winners had the opportunity to be distributed as part of Joy's Her Porn 1 collection . The second Petra Joy Award was presented in 2012.
