Candida Royalle (2013)

Candida Royalle , actually Candice Vadala , (* 15. October 1950 in New York City , New York ; † 7. September 2015 in Mattituck , New York) was an American porn film producer - director and - actress . She was considered one of the first feminist porn film makers .

Life

Royalle was raised Catholic and studied at the Parsons School of Design and the City University of New York . She lived in San Francisco in the 1970s . There she began a career as a porn actress in 1975 and played in numerous productions. Most of them date from 1975 to 1983.

In 1984 she started her own production company, Femme Productions , with the aim of making pornography for women. As the first film at Femme Productions 1984 appeared Femme , also the directorial debut of Royalle. Femme Productions films differ from most mainstream productions, among other things, in the presence of a plot. Safer sex has been practiced in femme productions since 1986 .

Femme Productions initially worked with a distribution company that took the films into the program and paid shares in the profits to Femme Productions according to a royalty model . When the company was no longer ready for this in 1992 and instead wanted to buy the films, which would have been financially less favorable for Femme Productions, Royalle also founded its own sales company, Femme Distributions . In the meantime, the Femme Productions films are distributed by Adam & Eve .

In 2007, Royalle founded Femme Chocolat , another label specializing in films with African American actresses.

Royalle's films are sold around 10,000 times a month. The older productions are still selling unusually well. Several of Royalle's films are considered classics.

Royalle also gave lectures at US universities.

Candida Royalle died on September 7th, 2015 of complications from ovarian cancer (ovarian cancer).

Awards

For her pioneering work in pornography for women, Royalle has received various awards. In 2006 she received the Feminist Porn Award for her life's work and the PorYes Award in 2009 . She also became a member of the AVN Hall of Fame and the XRCO Hall of Fame .
