Petrela ( Albanian  also  Petrelë ) is a village south of Tirana in Albania . The village in the municipality of Tirana is located on a hilltop south of the Erzen River at around 500  m above sea level. A.

A short road connects the place with the main road SH3 from Tirana to Elbasan, which runs along the river . It is around 15 kilometers from the intersection to the center of Tirana. Petrela has remained an agricultural village.

Until 2015 Petrela was an independent municipality ( komuna ) , which in 2011 had 5542 inhabitants. In addition to the main town, the villages Picall , Stërmas , Tagan , Shënkolla , Durisht , Dabresh , Qehaja , Shytas , Hekal , Kryezi , Përcëllesh , Gurra e Vogël , Gurra e Madhe , Barbas , Daias , Fikas and Mullet belonged to the municipality, which was one area of 68 square kilometers. Mullet lies below Petrela on the bridge over the Ore. Currently (2014) is being built in Mullet on the A3 autostrada .

Castle entrance

Petrela is best known for its castle , which was part of the defense system of the Albanian prince Skanderbeg in the 15th century . The castle is located on a pointed mountain west of the village, overlooking the entire Erzen valley. From here the traffic routes between Tirana and Elbasan were controlled over the Krraba Pass . The first fortifications probably date from the 3rd century. In the 9th century the complex was expanded and served as a base for the numerous local rulers of Central Albania. Later, an outer wall was added to secure the rather small but well-fortified castle at the top. A restaurant was built inside the castle around 2000 and new buildings were built on top of the ruins of towers. The historical building structure was greatly changed by the superstructures. The restaurant and castle bring visitors from Tirana to the village. In the meantime, other tourist restaurants have sprung up around Petrela.

Another fortress called Persqop on a mountain east of the village dates from the Illyrian era (3rd and 2nd centuries BC). Only a 30 meter long and six meter high fragment of the stone wall has survived. A grave was also discovered in the castle.
At the village of Mullet is the bride's doorway .

The name Petrela is probably a mixture of the ancient Greek petra and the Latin alba and means white stone .
