The city of Petrolina , officially Município de Petrolina , founded in 1893, is located in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco . In 2011, 305,352 people lived in Petrolina on an area of 4559 km². It is the sixth most populous city in the state.
Petrolina is located to the north bordering the Rio São Francisco about 35 km by air from the Sobradinho reservoir . The annual precipitation is mostly below 213 mm. This makes the area one of the driest areas of the Brazilian Sertão . In contrast to this extreme, the Sobradinho reservoir and the Rio São Francisco provide an almost endless source of water, which turns the otherwise semi-desert-like landscape into fertile arable land.
Many citizens find work in numerous orchards. Large quantities of tropical fruits (e.g. pineapple , mango , papaya ) are exported from this area to distant countries, especially Europe.
