Peter (Cammin)

Peter († 1300 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, Bishop of Cammin in Pomerania from 1296 until his death .

He was born out of wedlock and belonged to the Dominican order . In the tradition of the order he is referred to as "Polonus", which is possibly to denote his affiliation to the Dominican province of Poland , to which most of the Dominican convents in Pomerania belonged at that time.

In the Diocese of Pomerania had after the death of Bishop Jaromar of 1293/1294, died, the Camminer Domkapitel the domkustos Wizlaw elected as the new bishop. Wizlaw personally moved to Rome to obtain confirmation of his bishopric from the Pope. But Pope Boniface VIII rejected the election because it should not have been canonical . Instead, the Pope appointed the Dominican priest Peter, who was active at the Curia, as the new Bishop of Cammin. This is reported by a papal bull dated January 9, 1296. This was the first time a pope had personally chosen a bishop of Cammin instead of confirming a bishop elected by the Cammin cathedral chapter.

Peter received his episcopal ordination in Rome through Gerhard , the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina . From 1297 to 1298 Peter stayed in his diocese, as evidenced by documents issued by him. In 1299 and up to October 14th, 1300 documents were issued by his vicar general named Hildebrand. Peter was probably still alive then. He may have died in Genoa on a trip to Rome .

After his death, the Camminer cathedral chapter could not agree on a successor. Some canons elected Günther von Werle , canons in Güstrow and members of the Mecklenburg Princely House, others elected Heinrich von Wacholz . The latter was confirmed by the Pope and was thus able to prevail.
