Jaromar (bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaromar von Rügen (* around 1267 , † around 1294 ) was a member of the Rügen Princely House and a Roman Catholic clergyman. At the end of the 13th century he was elected Bishop of Cammin in Pomerania .

Jaromar was a son of Prince Wizlaw II of Rügen . He was first mentioned on April 15, 1280 as "scholaris". Afterwards he was archdeacon at the Nikolaikirche in Stralsund .

After Bishop Hermann von Gleichen, who died at the beginning of 1289, had strengthened the independence of the diocese of Cammin with his politics, the Pomeranian dukes tried to bind the diocese to themselves again. Under their influence, Jaromar, whose sister Margaret was the wife of Duke Bogislaw IV, was elected successor by the Camminer cathedral chapter in 1289 . In a bull of Pope Nicholas IV on October 7, 1289, he was designated as the elected bishop. Despite the rapprochement with the Pomeranian rulers, Jaromar had the possessions of the monastery confirmed by the Margraves of Brandenburg .

The episcopal ordination Jaromar not received during his tenure. In 1292 the Augustinian hermit Incelerius can be traced as auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Cammin.

Jaromar died in 1294 and was buried in the Camminer Cathedral . The cathedral custodian Wizlaw , elected as his successor by the cathedral chapter , was not confirmed by the pope; rather, in 1296 the Pope appointed the Dominican priest Peter, who was active at the Curia, as the new bishop.
