Petrus Kenicius (Latinized, originally Peter Königsson ; * 1555 in Umeå ; † February 3, 1636 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

Kenicius, son of a trader, studied at Uppsala University from 1575 to 1578 after attending the Latin school in Gävle and was ordained in 1578 . He then perfected his theological knowledge at the universities of Rostock and Wittenberg , where he received his master's degree in 1586 . After returning to Sweden he became a professor at the Collegium Stockholmense in 1587 , but fell out with King John III. and received a brief prison term. At the Synod of Uppsala in 1593, which secured the victory of Lutheranism in Sweden, Kenicius was one of the twelve assessors. He then worked as a theology professor at the rebuilt University of Uppsala.

In the autumn of 1595 Kenicius was appointed bishop of Skara and since then at least he has been a loyal follower of Duke (later King) Charles (IX) . In 1608 Kenicius was appointed bishop of Strängnäs , but had to travel to Livonia on a diplomatic mission before taking office . When Archbishop Olaus Martini died in March 1609 , Kenicius was appointed his successor at the request of the king and was introduced on July 2nd. In 1611 he crowned Gustav II Adolf as king and worked with him as loyally as before with his father. As a member (since 1595) and spokesman for the pastorate in the Reichstag , he stood up for the independence of the church on the side of Johannes Rudbeckius , especially after Gustav Adolf's death towards Axel Oxenstierna .

Kenicius was particularly committed to improving catechism teaching and theological training. For the latter purpose he translated Matthias Hafenreffer's Compendium doctrinae coelestis , which became the dominant theological textbook in Sweden. In 1617 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.
