Synod of Uppsala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Synod of Uppsala ( sw .: Uppsala Möte ) was a council of the Church of Sweden that took place in Uppsala from February 25 to March 20, 1593 . Even Duke Charles and the Imperial Council of Sweden were present. The chairman was Nicolaus Olai Bothniensis (* around 1550, † 1600). With the Synod of Uppsala the Catholic reforms of the 1592 deceased King John III. discarded and the Reformation consolidated in Sweden.

background

Gustav I. Wasa had enforced the separation of the Swedish Church from the Pope at the Diet of Västerås (1527) - mainly for reasons of state finances: the state was able to take over church property. Gustav was not interested in religion and did not force changes in teaching and liturgy , but temporarily supported the reformer Olaus Petri . In 1536 the Swedish-language mass was introduced, i. H. decrees that the church service is to be celebrated in the national language in future. In 1571 Archbishop Laurentius Petri published an evangelical church ordinance , which was confirmed by the synod the following year.

King Johan III, who ruled between 1568 and 1592. was first married to the Polish princess Katharina Jagiellonica . Her Roman Catholic raised son, Sigismund was heir to the throne . Starting in 1574, Johann changed the liturgy of the Swedish church in the direction of Roman Catholicism and suspended the church order of Laurentius Petri after only four years of validity. When Johann died in November 1592, his brother, Duke Karl, took power until Sigismund arrived in Sweden. Charles showed anti-liturgical and Calvinist tendencies and had the synod convened in Uppsala.

decisions

Among other things, it was decided:

consequences

  • As a result of the resolution, the Swedish Church finally became Evangelical Lutheran and the social position of the clergy was strengthened.
  • Sigismund did not arrive in Sweden until the fall of 1593. He had to confirm the resolutions of Uppsala in order to be crowned at the Diet in Uppsala in early 1594.
  • The current church ordinance of the Church of Sweden from 2015 mentions that faith and doctrine were affirmed in the resolution of 1593.
