Louis-Edmond Pettiti
Louis-Edmond Pettiti (born January 14, 1916 in Asnières-sur-Seine , † November 17, 1998 in Paris ) was a French lawyer who dealt in particular with issues of human rights .
Life
The son of a waiter was admitted to the Paris Bar at the age of nineteen. In April 1978 he founded an institute for human rights education there under the auspices of UNESCO . From 1978 to 1979 he was President of the Bar Association. At the UNESCO congress on human rights education in September 1978 in Vienna , he acted as general rapporteur.
He advised a number of Eastern European dissidents who were charged in their countries of origin for undertakings declared to be dangerous to the state, including Natan Sharanski , whose trial in Moscow in 1978 he was denied , and Václav Havel , who was convicted in 1979 of "riot". In February 1980 he was a member of the five-person commission of the United Nations that was sent to the Iranian capital during the hostage-taking from Tehran to negotiate with the rulers.
In 1980 he succeeded Pierre-Henri Teitgen at the European Court of Human Rights and held this post until the ECHR was converted into a permanent court on November 1, 1998. A few days later, Pettiti died at the age of 82.
Pettiti was President of the International Association of Catholic Lawyers, Pax Romana , and in that capacity led the Congresses in Dakar , Detroit and Manila . He was Vice-President of the French Comparative Law Society and was a member of the Administrative Council of the University of Paris II and the Steering Committee of the International Association for European Law.
