Pfaidlerei is an Austrian name for a bedding , shirt or haberdashery shop . This trade name is now considered obsolete, the current Austrian dictionary no longer uses the term. However, it is often found in literary sources from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Etymologically, the term contains the Bavarian word "Pfoad" (see Bavarian passwords ), which was also used in the written language in the spelling "Pfaid" and means "shirt" or "outer dress".

In Joseph Roth's novel The Story of the 1002nd Nights , the protagonist Mizzi Schinagl runs a Pfaidlerei. Her Baron Taittinger financed this instead of paying alimony after she became pregnant by him. The novel claims that this was a common practice at the time when gentlemen from a better family compromised a young lady from lower class in such a way. In Johann Nepomuk Nestroy's play Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt , part of the plot takes place in a Pfaidlerei. From Ludwig Anzengruber's biography it is known that his impoverished mother ran a Pfaidlerei in Vienna in order to be able to finance the son's school attendance.

Due to the trade regulations of the time, the number of Pfaidlereien was limited and the privilege of running one could only be inherited. Some of the Viennese clothing stores and chains that still exist today originally go back to such Pfaidlereien, such as the Brieftaube company, the men's outfitter Malowan & Franz , and Joseph Kranner & Sons in the 1st district of Vienna or the Bettwaren Birkowitsch company in Vienna- Ottakring .
