history

The parish was founded by the Kuenringers around 1200. At the time of the first documentary mention of the Arbesbach parish in 1246, it already existed. Between 1567 and around 1630, the Lords of Starhemberg and their successors hired Protestant preachers. As a result of the Counter Reformation , Arbesbach was again Catholic from 1670.

After a fire in 1756 that destroyed large parts of Arbesbach as well as the church and the rectory, the church was rebuilt in his capacity as patron saint with the approval of the Passau consistory and with the support of Count Leopold von Dietrichstein . The construction was financed from the assets of the Altmelon branch church at the time .

The late baroque hall church was built over the old church between 1761 and 1772 . Georg Rueff from Hollabrunn was hired as a builder . The vault of the nave and the steeple built Kasparbauer Schmid. Adam Neylreich from Zwettl was responsible for the stone carving and Johann Georg Dreyhan from Marchegg was responsible for the roof structure . In order to be able to erect the new building, which was larger than the old church, a residential building had to be demolished, the school rebuilt and the cemetery wall relocated.

The church was consecrated on May 17, 1796 by Bishop Sigismund Anton von Hohenwart .
