The parish church of Christ Resurrection in Cologne belongs to the Dean's Office of North Rhine-Westphalia of the Old Catholic Church in Germany . The associated congregation has around 600 members. It was founded in 1872.

First church

The community first used the former Cologne council chapel St. Maria in Jerusalem as a church , which the council had used until the French era . Since this was not enough for the large community, a new building was soon considered.

Former Church of the Resurrection

With the construction of the Church of the Resurrection on Jülicher Straße, at the corner of Moltkestraße, in the southern Neustadt from May 1906 to October 1907, consecration on November 17, 1907, the largest independent church of the Old Catholics in Germany was created. The architect for the church, rectory and community center was Peter Recht from Cologne. The style and location of the church fit into the large number of sacred buildings around the Cologne rings . From Barbarossaplatz , Roonstrasse was a direct line of sight to the imposing church tower on the left of the nave. The two-bay church with a wide transept and crossing dome was equipped with two large rose windows in the gables of the transept and central nave. The choir was directly adjacent to the houses in the line of flight of Moltkestrasse and was highlighted there by two smaller towers with pyramid helmets. The pulpit of the church was donated by Carl Stollwerck, the youngest son of Franz Stollwerck .

War destruction

In 1944, towards the end of the Second World War , the church was completely destroyed except for the tower in two bombing raids. In the post-war period from 1953 to 1992, the community established itself in a simple emergency church on the site, which was built by the Bonn architect Helmut Kröger. The tower was completely renovated in 1989/90. The community lacked the necessary funds for a complete reconstruction.

New building

The attractive corner property at Jülicher- / Moltke-Straße was sold and used for the construction of an office building. However, the monument authority made it a condition that the building should let the original outlines of the church shine through. This seems to have succeeded. The bright red steel frame of the new mirror-glazed building designed and built by Professor František Sedláček ( FH-Köln ) from 1991 to 1993 with a sacred space in the basement (on the site of the former parish garden), apartments and offices on the upper floors, is reminiscent of today (on a scale of 1: 1) to the original silhouette of the late historical church building. In addition to the adjacent restored parish and parish house, the congregation uses a smaller area of the complex under a glass pyramid as a church for their services, which was consecrated again on May 22, 1993.

art

In the chancel there is a bronze sculpture composed of several parts by the Cologne sculptor Franz Josef Lipensky . In the middle is the Christ enthroned on the cross , to whom people from different life situations stream from the four directions. The four evangelists stand under the cross , and the whole is framed by the burning bush , which is represented with glass elements. The front of the tabernacle with a communion scene and a sculpture on the ambo depicting the lamb and the book with the seven seals are also by Lipensky.

Backlit glass windows from the emergency church from the post-war period hang in the foyer of the church.
