The parish church of Hernstein is in the center of the market town of Hernstein in the Baden district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church , consecrated to St. Lawrence of Rome , belongs to the Deanery Pottenstein in the vicariate under the Vienna Woods of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

In a document around 1170, Hernstein Castle was named as a parish. From 1445 the church was incorporated into the Neuberg monastery until the monastery was lifted off in 1786 .

The church was badly damaged in the wars of 1529, 1532 and 1683. In 1771 a sacristy with oratory was added and in 1772 the Patrizius chapel was rebuilt. The tower was built in 1822. A renovation of the interior in 1956/1966 led to the removal of the neo-Gothic altars from 1903/1904. The exterior of the church was restored in 1976/1977 and 1998.

architecture

The late Gothic church with a south-facing Romanesque chapel and a west tower is closely surrounded by houses and the former cemetery wall.

The simple hall structure has a retracted choir with a five -eighth end and a two-storey sacristy and oratory annex to the north. The aisle-like chapel in the south has a retracted apse and a Romanesque arched window. The west tower wears a pointed helmet.

Furnishing

In the place of the high altar is an object pasticcio from 1958 to 1965. The tabernacle as a round temple tower of David from the first quarter of the 19th century from Fronleiten Castle near Graz carved with a relief of Christ as Judge of the World in the Mandorla around 1960. Above it is a crucifix from 1700 from the subsidiary church of St. Peter in Dunkelstein near Ternitz, flanked by adoring angels, acquired around 1775 from Johann Nepomuk Platzer in 1958.

In the nave on the triumphal arch wall on the right, a figure of Mary and Child around 1500 from the city cross chapel (?) Is transferred here, on the right an apostle figure from the first half of the 18th century is carved over as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ in the middle of the 20th century.

A picture of Anna Selbdritt from the middle of the 17th century was transferred here from the chapel of Starhemberg Castle, which was closed at the end of the 18th century . A picture of the death of St. Josef is from 1851. The former high altar painting St. Laurentius kneeling on clouds was painted by Anton Schirnhofer in 1851.

A crucifix of the Patriziuskapelle made of pear wood from the first quarter of the 18th century Giovanni Giuliani or his school is in safekeeping. On the west wall of the Laurentiuskapelle are the statues Florian and Johannes Nepomuk from the middle of the 18th century and on the south wall a Pietà from the middle of the 19th century.

Tombstones

  • At the front of the choir a grave slab without inscription with a framed cross over a clover leaf arch with lily-shaped leaf ends circumscribed by a circle from the fourth quarter of the 13th century.
  • In the churchyard grave slab without inscription with a cross bar and cross-shaped bar ends with noses above a pointed arch structured with tracery with heraldic shield and oath hand around 1300.
  • In the churchyard, the grave slab is badly weathered with an illegible all-round inscription with a cross above a pointed arch structured with tracery around 1300.
  • In the churchyard, tombstone von Wulst surrounded by a double arch on a bud-shaped console from the middle of the 19th century.
