The Fort Wayne International Airport ( IATA code : FWA , ICAO code : KFWA ) is the commercial airport of the American metropolis Fort Wayne in the US state of Indiana .

Location and transport links

Fort Wayne International Airport is seven miles south of downtown Fort Wayne. Interstate 69 runs west of the airport , while Interstate 469 and US Highway 33 run on a common route south of the airport. The airport is not involved in local public transport. Passengers have to use rental cars and taxis.

history

The base in 1943

The airport was built in 1941 as a military airfield. The base was named Baer Army Air Base , but was also known as Baer Field . The construction cost around ten million US dollars . After the end of World War II , the site was sold to the city of Fort Wayne for the symbolic price of one US dollar . The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority was established in 1985 and has operated the airport ever since. In 1991 the airport was renamed Fort Wayne International Airport . In 1996 the passenger terminal was expanded. In 2007 a new control tower was put into operation.

Runways

Fort Wayne International Airport has three runways . The runway 05/23 is 3652 meters long and 46 meters wide, the surface consists partly of asphalt and concrete. Runway 14/32 is 2,439 meters long and 46 meters wide, and the pavement also consists partly of asphalt and concrete. The shortest runway at the airport has the code 09/27, is 1210 meters long and 23 meters wide. The surface is made of asphalt.

Passenger terminal

Fort Wayne International Airport has a passenger terminal . The terminal is named after Paul Baer , a World War I flying ace. It is equipped with eight piers and six passenger boarding bridges equipped. In 1996 the terminal was expanded from 7,154 square meters to 11,334 square meters.

Freight terminal

On the southern apron there is a freight terminal, which is known as the Air Trade Center . Part of this building is classified as a Foreign Trade Zone .

Control tower

The airport control tower is located south of the runway 09/27. It has a height of 65 meters and was put into operation in 2007.

military

On the east side of the airport is the Fort Wayne Air National Guard Station of the Indiana Air National Guard . The 122nd Fighter Wing is stationed on the base . It is equipped with Fairchild-Republic A-10 aircraft.

Airlines and Destinations

Fort Wayne International Airport is used by the airlines Allegiant Air , American Eagle , Delta Connection and United Express . The airport is also used by the cargo airlines FedEx and UPS Airlines .

There are 14 destinations in the United States , including the hubs of the individual airlines.
